More world-class cycling action will roll into South Australia next January. Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell has confirmed the 2015 Santos Tour Down Under will be held from January 17-25.

“This year’s event was one of the best yet and it was a thrill to watch Australian cycling stars Simon Gerrans and Cadel Evans fight for the overall victory,” Mr Bignell said.

“An estimated 766,000 people lined the streets to watch the race, with millions more around the world enjoying it on television.”

The 2014 Santos Tour Down Under began and ended on new city circuits and also visited the Adelaide Hills, Barossa and Fleurieu Peninsula.

Just one second separated Gerrans and Evans when they crossed the finish line on Australia Day, with Italian Diego Ulissi placing third.

“The Santos Tour Down Under is loved by fans not only for the unforgettable action on the road, but also for the festival atmosphere that surrounds it,” Mr Bignell said.

“Fantastic associated events are held by councils hosting race stages and the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo gets bigger and better each year.”

This year cycling fans can relive all of the action through a new initiative, with the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under highlights TV program just published for sale on iTunes.

The 52 minute program includes the highlights of each stage, and is available now on iTunes in both standard and high definition. This is a new way of providing post-event programming to the public and replaces the retail DVD that was produced in recent years.

Mr Bignell said the Santos Tour Down Under was the largest cycling event outside Europe.

“This year we were pleased to welcome a range of international guests to the race including UCI President Brian Cookson and Tour de France Director Christian Prudhomme, who saw tens of thousands of people enjoying the event,” Mr Bignell said.

“Mr Prudhomme described the Santos Tour Down Under as the Tour de France in January, a comment that shows how significant our race is on the international cycling calendar.”

The 2015 Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia, with routes to be announced in July. The festival of cycling officially kicks off on Saturday 17 January 2015 with the Team Presentation event.
