After travelling almost 9,000 kilometres through the Northern Territory, spending 30 nights sleeping in a swag under the stars and swimming in 25 waterholes, ‘Outback Adventurer’ Allan Dixon says goodbye to
the Territory this week.

Minister for Tourism Matt Conlan said Allan’s role as a tourism ambassador had increased national and international coverage of the Territory and would boost visitor numbers.

“Allan has been an outstanding ambassador for the Northern Territory and I thank him for the passion, enthusiasm and creativity he has shown on the job,” Mr Conlan said.

Over the past six months, Allan has travelled to more than 23 destinations throughout every corner of the NT, posting more than 500 images and videos of his experiences.

He has hiked 300km throughout the Territory including the Larapinta Trail; seen over 300 crocodiles and 100 wallabies; opened a mango for the first time and kissed George the Royal baby crocodile.

“Allan has played a key role in targeting the youth sector, especially backpackers and working holiday makers,” Mr Conlan said.

“He has written blogs, shot videos, taken photos and used social media to showcase our amazing Territory experiences to the rest of the world.

“His videos alone have had a combined 110,000 views. He has made short videos of working holiday makers, including some on a cattle station, talking about why they came and what they love about NT.

“Just last week, one of Allan’s videos featuring a jumping crocodile at Crocosaurus Cove in slow motion made the finals of Royal Caribbean Cruises’ first InstaFilm Festival. This video is his most watched to date with more than 41,000 views. Overall, Allan’s work has seen him amass more than 6000 global followers across his social media sites.

“Allan’s unique, quirky style has helped portray the Territory as a fun and must-visit destination. He has done a fantastic job telling everyone why they should Do the NT.”

Allan said the role of the Territory’s ‘Best Jobs in the World’ Outback Adventurer had been the experience of a lifetime.

“The Northern Territory is different to anywhere else in Australia,” Dixon said.

“The Territory is built for road trips. It’s such a huge area of open landscapes that need exploring. It has a great laid back lifestyle, huge areas of wilderness, the work is good, and it’s not over crowded.

“My favourite place that I encourage everyone to visit is the Karingana look out on the Valley of the Winds walk as the view will leave you speechless. I didn’t know it existed and I was honestly blown away,” Allan said.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Outback Adventurer and I encourage everyone to visit this incredible part of the world.”

The Irish dot.com entrepreneur beat a competitive field of almost 7000 entrants to win the dream position of the Territory’s ‘Outback Adventurer’ last June, as part of Tourism Australia’s ‘Best Jobs in the World’ campaign.

The ‘Best Jobs in the World’ is one of many initiatives of the Territory Government through Tourism NT to return the tourism industry to growth and boost annual overnight visitor expenditure from $1.7 billion to $2.2 billion by 2020.

The youth market is an important source for the Territory with 84,000 international youth travellers visiting the NT in the year to September 2013.
