Political turmoil may hurt Thailand tourism

TOURISM AUTHORITY OF THAILAND
Situation looks a bit murky in Thailand as the top court ordered the country’s prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra to step down with several of her cabinet ministers. The ruling comes after the prime minister was
accused of ‘illegal transfer’ of a government minister from his post so that she could incorporate a member of her family in the ministry.

Just when Bangkok’s tourism industry was coming back to normalcy after being marred by regular protests and demonstrations staged by anti-government factions, the recent judgment could reignite the violence that caused the deaths of dozens of people in Thailand.

A data released by STR Global’s data shows that Bangkok hotel occupancies in January declined 26 percent in year-on-year performance. This further worsened to 37 percent in February as the protests escalated, triggering state-wide emergency and prompting many travel warnings.
