Healthcare Tourism: Malaysia’s Fastest Growing Sector

medical-icon
Malaysia has progressively worked towards building a strong healthcare tourism sector for almost fifteen years. Millions of tourists have come into the country for a bit of sun, sand and
surgery. Foreign expertise and investments have been pumped into private hospitals to meet the growing global demand of medical tourists. It has paid off. Malaysia’s revenue from the healthcare tourism sector increased tenfold in the last ten years. This makes it one of the best ever growing sectors in the country.

The Deloitte Center for Health Solutions estimated that the value of the world medical tourism market in 2008 was approximately US$60 billion, and they anticipate double-digit growth rates in the years ahead. The revenue growth in Malaysia has been exceptional. In 12 out of the last 14 years, healthcare tourism charted double-digit growth.

However, the last two years the development recorded has been in the lower end of the double digits – 16.2 per cent in 2012 and an estimated 15.8 per cent in 2013.
