Fire affected communities in the Mid North are recovering and Tourism Minister Leon Bignell is encouraging South Australians to lend a hand by visiting the region during the school holidays.
Mr Bignell visited the region recently, meeting with local tourism operators who have been doing it tough since the fires.
“While some roads remain closed, the Southern Flinders Ranges is definitely open for business,” Mr Bignell said.
“These communities have been hit hard and I’d encourage people to consider visiting this truly amazing part of South Australia and help boost the local economy.”
Mr Bignell said tourism operators in and around Bangor, Laura, Melrose and Wirrabara want people to know they are open for business and ready to take their bookings, including the Laura Folk Fair this weekend.
“The recent fires, and in some cases floods, have really knocked this part of South Australia around economically and it would be great if people could spend some of their time and money exploring this beautiful region.
“Anyone who has travelled through a fire affected area knows regrowth happens very quickly and just seeing this regeneration is an experience in itself.”
Minister for Regional Development Geoff Brock said a trip to the Southern Flinders Ranges would also benefit towns like Port Pirie.
“Port Pirie is the gateway to the Flinders Ranges and if people aren’t visiting the tourist destinations to the north this obviously impacts on towns along the route,” Mr Brock said.
“Whether you stop overnight or just refuel and get the kids a pie for lunch, it all helps the local economy.”
