An alarming report reveals that more than one million flights were cancelled due to severe weather conditions in the United States. According to a latest annalysis from masFlight, during the period of
December 2013 to February 2014, almost 1, 08, 600 flights were cancelled and 8, 94, 300 flights were delayed due to severe weather conditions.The alarming figures for the current year are almost 20% more than the previous years. The reports analyzed and compiled by masFlight, a data and software company that specializes in airline operation also revealed that almost 90, 607, 300 passengers were impacted – a 25% more than average impact in the last four years.
According to the new report, cancellations cost airlines around $500 million and airports $4.5 million. Affected passengers lost out on $5.3 billion, way above the $2.9 billion averaged between 2009 and 2013, according to masFlight. The rate of flight cancellation in 2013-2014 was almost 5.5% an increase of almost 3% than previous years.
Although the meteorological winter has ended, the U.S. weather is still showing its wrath in terms of freezing rain and winter storms. The first 3 days of March witnessed another winter storm causing cancellation of almost 6500 flights in the U.S.
The present weather condition is predicted to last for a few more days resulting in further woes for the passengers.
