Volcano in Guatemala prompts flights to be diverted

Almost 3,000 people may be evacuated from Guatemala as a volcano erupted in the region. The powerful explosion of the Pacaya volcano spewing ash and lava and the authorities are
considering forced evacuation.

The first explosion happened on Saturday, 01.03.14 and another new explosion happened on Sunday 02.03.14 with ash clouds reaching a height or at least 4km (3 miles). Flights have been diverted from the area, some 50km (30 miles) south of the capital, Guatemala City.

The Pacaya is one of three active volcanoes in the Central American nation. The other two are the Fuego and the Santa Maria.

Pacaya National Park director, Humberto Morales said that they are still consulting with the National Disaster Management Centre on whether there is a need to evacuate 3,000 people who live in the villages of El Rodeo and Patrocinio. Total access to the area near the volcano has been suspended. An amber alert, a third highest alert has been issued warning people to stay on guard and evacuate at the shortest notice.
