The world famous LEGOLAND® amusement park, Tivoli Gardens and Denmark’s other top-ranking theme parks and family attractions make Denmark a top choice for familiy holidays – as do th
e many sandy beaches.
There are two main clusters of theme parks, family-friendly heritage centres and sandy beaches in Denmark where major attractions are just 20-30km apart – one around LEGOLAND® (next to Billund Airport) and one in Djurslandjust north of Aarhus with easy access from Aarhus and Aalborgairports. Other popular family holiday areas include North Jutland, Funen,Lolland-Falster and Greater Copenhagen.
Go Weird n’ Wild in Denmark, try out:
1. Sleeping with wolves
Pitch your tent and light a campfire – and listen to the howling wolves. You can sleep in the wild in the Scandinavian Animal Park (Djursland), which is also home to bears, elks and other animals from all over Scandinavia.
2. Diving with sharks
You can dive with sharks at the Kattegat Centre (Djursland). Professional divers will take you down into the 1.5-million litre oceanarium, which is home to congers, rays and five different kinds of sharks. And if you’re not quite that brave you can also venture along the glass shark tunnel.
3. Shooting with catapults
Jump on the tread-wheel and help power the life-sized catapults at the Medieval Centre in Nykøbing Falster (Lolland-Falster) – and watch the flying rocks as they hit the lake. The experience centre features medieval war machines and daily knight’s tournaments. Combine the experience by visiting the new Castle Centre in Vordingborg with interactive storytelling – they even have their own gaming universe (opening in April 2014).
4. Walking through a rainbow
Spectacularly perched on top of one of Denmark’s most-visited art museums, ARoS in Aarhus, ‘your rainbow panorama’ is an art-installation skywalk that lets experience the cityscape bathed in the hues of the spectrum.
5. Riding the ‘Hurricane’
The only rollercoaster in northern Europe to travel over and under water, “Orkanen” (The Hurricane), takes you to the height of seven stories and then – at a speed of 75 kph – rushes down under the water. Fårup Sommerland (North Jutland) has been hailed as the world’s third-best ‘Children’s Park’ by the leading US industry magazine “Amusement Today” (2010-2012).
6. Diving with penguins
You can dive through the icescapes and whizz past real live penguins in Polar Land – a whirlwind drop-coaster in Europe’s biggest LEGOLAND® where you can also get splashing in Pirate Land – and you can visit the Knight’s Kingdom with dragons and castles, and Miniland with world-famous landmarks made of 20 million LEGO® bricks.
7. Living like a Flintstone
Spend your holiday living, working and eating like a Flintstone! At the Land of Legends (Sealand, 30 min from Copenhagen), families can volunteer to spend their holidays living in reconstructed Iron Age settlements. No iPads or computer games – just pure imagination.
8. Sailing like a Viking
Experience the adventure of sailing on a reconstructed Viking ship in the sea by the Viking Ship Museum (Sealand, 25 min from Copenhagen) where you can also follow artisan craftspeople as they demonstrate how these age-old ships were built.
9. Getting spooked – in Tivoli Gardens
Two weeks before Halloween, Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen transforms into wonderland of spooky fun with more than 15,000 Jack ’O’ lanterns and plenty of family entertainment. But beware – at 6 pm the “monsters” are let loose!
10. Climbing the mighty sand dunes
Climb the mighty sand dunes – some of Europe’s biggest – by the wide-open west coast. Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is engulfed in huge drifting dunes with open views to sea, the blueberry scrublands and the woodlands.
