Closing ceremony of Sochi Winter Olympics ended on a note of global unity

Sochi Winter Olympics
The Sochi Winter Olympics concluded on Sunday, 23.02.14 night and the viewers were taken through a journey of a cultural and artistic fair of Russians own indigenous treasures. The ceremony was closed by
Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee.

Bach was very happy with the way these “Athletes’ Games have united the world, and how thousands of global travelers come from around the world to visit and participate in these games. The Sochi Olympics have sent a message of peace, tolerance and respect, he added.

The evening was marked with several attractions, hundreds of silvery “fish” swam in the “Black Sea” on the floor of the stadium and they began to form the five Olympic rings. But like in the opening ceremony, one of the dots of white light failed to open — at first. Eventually, it sprang into form, too much laughter and cheers

There also were two final medal ceremonies, including the crowd-pleasing awards for the top three — all Russians — in the men’s 50-kilometer cross-country ski race.

The closing ceremony featured 62 classical pianists playing at one time, members of the Bolshoi and Kirov ballets performing moments from some of their most famous productions, and a tribute to Russian literary heroes like Leo Tolstoy and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

The Olympic flag was lowered and given to representatives of Pyeongchang, South Korea, the host city for the Winter Olympics in four years.

After 16 days of competition, the winter Olympics came to a close for this year. 98 sets of medals were awarded and Russia alone won 13 gold medals.
