ICOMOS Declaration on the protection of Egypt's cultural heritage

The President and members of ICOMOS expressed their serious concerns about the deteriorating situation in Egypt and condemned the looting of Malawi Museum in Minya and the destruction of historic religious
architecture and monuments across the country.monuments across the country.

As a signatory to the Hague Convention of 1954 for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and its two Protocols, the World Heritage Convention of 1972 and the Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing Import, Export and Transfer  of Ownership of Cultural Property of 1970, Egypt is committed to protecting its cultural heritage in all its integrity and gained legal instruments to prevent such tragedies.

The ICOMOS President Gustavo Araoz, urges the Egyptian authorities to ensure the protection of museums, libraries and archives, monuments and sites, including those harboring religious significance and demand that Egypt does everything possible to deter and prevent illicit trafficking of cultural property.

 ICOMOS also called the Egyptian people to respect and protect the cultural heritage of Egypt, whatever the historical periods, communities or denominations which it belongs, and to prevent illegal trafficking and irreversible losses for The important cultural heritage of Egypt for the benefit of future generations.libraries and archives, monuments and attractions , including those harboring religious significance and demand that Egypt makes every effort to deter and prevent illicit trafficking in cultural property.
