The prestigious World Snooker tournament, the Australian Snooker Goldfields Open, will return to Bendigo in 2014 and 2015 Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said.

“The Victorian Coalition Government is delighted that the event will remain in Bendigo, the only Australian event on the World Snooker Tour,” Ms Asher said.

“The Victorian Government is proud to continue its support of the Australian Snooker Goldfields Open as the event provides significant broadcast exposure, showcasing the region across 60 countries including China and the United Kingdom.

“The event is expected to generate continued economic benefit for Bendigo and the State over the next two years. Bendigo has enjoyed outstanding success of other major events, with tens of thousands of visitors travelling to Bendigo to see Grace Kelly: Style icon, The White Wedding Dress: 200 years of wedding fashions and The Golden Age of Couture at Bendigo Art Gallery.

“In June, participants in the tournament and visitors will be able to view the latest exhibition in the Bendigo International Collections Series – The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece, which will open at Bendigo Art Gallery.

“Major events, like the Australian Snooker Goldfields Open, create a substantial impact on tourism to regional Victoria. This of course translates into great business and employment opportunities for people in regional Victoria, as well as great prospects for the local community to experience world class events in their own city.”

Members for Northern Victoria, the Hon Wendy Lovell and Damian Drum both welcomed the announcement.

Ms Lovell said it’s fantastic to have this international event, one that brings great benefits to the local economy and promotes the region on an international level, here in Bendigo.

Mr Drum said the decision to continue the world event in Bendigo was a vote of confidence to the way the city and the organisers had managed the tournament for the past three years.

“I know that many people were keen to see future support locked in, and this announcement will be warmly welcomed,” Mr Drum said.

Following three successful tournaments, Martin Jolly, Senior Vice President and Managing Director IMG Australia/NZ is pleased to see the Goldfields Open return to Bendigo.

“IMG is proud to be working with World Snooker and the Victorian Major Events Company to once again bring the Australian Snooker Goldfields Open and the world’s best players to regional Victoria for another two years,” Mr Jolly said.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We are thrilled to keep this tournament in Bendigo until 2015.

“The high standard and professionalism of the Victorian Government and IMG has been exceptional over the past three years. The players, officials and fans have enjoyed visiting the Goldfields region and look forward to returning in 2014,” Mr Hearn said.

The 2014 Australian Snooker Goldfields Open will be held at Bendigo Stadium from 30 June until 6 July this year.
