To mobilize and increase connectivity among the ten member countries, the ASEAN travel and tourism industry awaits the completion of the high speed rail service connecting Malaysia and
Singapore. A long term goal that is speculated to see the maiden journey will ease the 250 mile trip within Kuala Lumpur and Singapore within 90 minutes.
One of the major current and long-term goals of ASEAN is to further connect the ten member countries, marketing the region as “ten countries, but one destination” for travelers. Considering the long travel time, visiting multiple cities across a handful of countries makes total sense for those coming to Southeast Asia from the States.
One project that aims to back up this plan is the proposed Penang – Kuala Lumpur – Singapore High Speed Rail that would allow travelers to make the journey from Malaysia south to Singapore at speeds up to 280 mph. The railway agreement was officially signed last February during a meeting between Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Needless to mention, the completion of this high speed rail network will make the ASEAN countries more tourist friendly. As per the predictions of the world tourism organization, by 2020 the global tourism industry along with the ASEAN nations will register massive tourism figures.
